Ole Andreas Hansen

Ole Andreas Hansen (Norway, (1824-1876) was a mason in Glasgow, Scotland and also a Major in the U.S. Army. He joined the Union army in 1863 as Able Andrew Hansen. According to his biography, Ole Andreas Hansen joined Barnum's circus in the autumn of 1865. He was Barnum's original Norwegian Giant. He was also known as Andrew Huren.

In his 1863 military papers, he is listed as being 6 feet 9.5 inches. His death certificate states 7 feet 0.3 inches. According to his autobiography he was 7 feet 1.4 inches. Newspaper clippings of the time have his height as 8 feet tall.

Some sources say that when he worked for P.T. Barnum he was known as Monsieur Joseph. There is a postcard version in existence of Unknown Giant ug0064 which has "Andrew Huren--Norwegian Giant--8 Ft" printed on the back.

When he returned to Europe in 1868 he gained quit a bit of weight. In 1872 he was said to have weighed 280 kilograms.
